The Bible Says
Thought For The Month
In the estimation of the rabbis it was the sum of religion to be always in a bustle of activity. They depended upon some outward performance to show their superior piety. Thus they separated their souls from God, and built themselves up in self-sufficiency. The same dangers still exist. As activity increases and men become successful in doing any work for God, there is danger of trusting to human plans and methods. There is a tendency to pray less, and to have less faith. Like the disciples, we are in danger of losing sight of our dependence on God, and seeking to make a savior of our activity. We need to look constantly to Jesus, realizing that it is His power which does the work. While we are to labor earnestly for the salvation of the lost, we must also take time for meditation, for prayer, and for the study of the word of God. Only the work accomplished with much prayer, and sanctified by the merit of Christ, will in the end prove to have been efficient for good. - DA 362.2
Pearls for Health
STOMACH ULCERS and H. PYLORI
Barry J. Marshall and J. Robin Warren, two Austrailian researchers have been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. They discovered the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and elucidated its role in gastritis and peptic uler disease. This bacterium has been known to exist since the early 1980's but only recently was it discovered to cause ulcers. Some researchers believe that the backteria may also cause stomach cancer.
H. pylori is found in the saliva of dogs, cats and other domesticated animals. How humans contact the infection is not well understood. An Asian study revealed that foods high in vitamin C reduced the chances of getting stomach cancer. ( Eur J Epidemiol. 2000; 20(1):67-71) Drinking cranberry juice regularly will reduce H. pylori infections. (Helicobacter. 2005 Apr; 10(2):139-45) Aloe vera has also been shown to inhibit the growth of H. pylori. (Planta Med. 1993 Mar;64(2):176-8)Antibiotics and medications that kill the bacteria and suppress stomach acid secretion are effective in eradicating the infection and healing the ulcers it causes. If you are having abdominal pain, made better with food, occurring especially during the night, see your health care provider, you may have H. pylori. In the meantime eat foods high in vitamin C, drink 100% cranberry juice daily and use aloe vera. This may give you the relief you need.
